Over 10,000,000 Cambodians do not have access to a toilet. This simple facility which most of us in the developed world take for granted is sometimes the cause of death in rural villages where whole communities defecate openly in the village fields.
Not having access to a toilet and being forced to practice open defecation is the cause of over 4,000 deaths among children under the age of 5 everyday!
wnt visited Cambodia earlier this year to witness the sanitation crisis for ourselves. What we saw shocked us. We met with children who had such chronic diarrhoea that they had to be rushed to the hospital to be put on drips and we met community leaders who told us stories of how there had been multiple cholera outbreaks due to poor sanitation. At every village we visited, we were shown filthy fields where villagers were forced to defecate openly. These were the same fields their children would play in and their pets would roam in.
We're working hard to solve the sanitation crisis and you can play a big part in helping us. Get involved by starting a fundraiser or make a donation! All funds raised are channeled directly to our implementing partner in Cambodia called Sustainable Cambodia. They have extensive experience working on sanitation projects and are experts in the field. Sustainable Cambodia is a 501(c)(3) registered charity.
