My Story

Gina and I are running the New Zealand leg of the Racing The Planet Ultramarathon. It is a 6 day self-supported stage race which starts on March 3rd 2019. The total distance of the course is 250 kilometers / 155 miles. Approximate distance per stage will be 40km, 41km, 41km, 42km, 78km, 10km. Total elevation gain will be 29,000 feet over the 250km / 155 miles and elevation loss will be 31,400 feet

We will be running to raise money for Mind HK which is a non-profit charity in Hong Kong that focuses on mental health. See the following site for more information on the charity www.mind.org.hk 

Our aim is to raise awareness of mental health and how important it is to invest time in taking care of yourself. We also want to try and remove some of the stigma that has historically come with this topic especially for those suffering from mental illness. There are more than 200 classified forms of mental illness. Some of the more common disorders are depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders. People need to be able to open up and talk about issues that they are having as mental illness touches us all in some way

Some data points from Mind HK:

- 1 in 7 Hong Kong people suffer from a common mental disorder

- 53% of HK secondary school pupils have displayed symptoms of depression

- Up to 1.7mil Hong Kong people have a diagnosable mental health problem
