Bayon Education and Development

The war against the Khmer Rouge and the Vietnamese occupation completely destroyed the Cambodian educational system and all its schools.
Cambodia remains one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia: in 2014, 15% of the Cambodian population officially lived below the national poverty line of $1/day (Source: World Bank, 2018).

Even today, few resources are allocated to education, resulting in a lack of infrastructure and qualified teachers. Unable to afford schooling for their children and not always aware of the importance of education, many families send their children out of school to work.

Committed to education since nearly 30 years, our mission is to provide a good quality education to the underprivileged children and youth living in the Angkor temples area and the nearby villages. We aim to:

- Offer practical and technical vocational training that allows an opening to the labor market and thus to generate an income for the student,
- Ensure the good health and hygiene of children and support families in difficulty due to illness,
- Support environmental protection and sustainable agriculture,
- Encourage the development of income-generating activities for families.

Bayon Education and Development works for education through 4 programs:
- A primary school, which welcomes children from kindergarten to grade 6,
- A follow-up program for our students who continue their studies in public secondary schools, high schools and universities,
- A vocational training program in bakery and pastry making, which welcomes young Cambodian women from disadvantaged backgrounds and a Coffee Shop,
- A green farming project which aims to train families in agroecology but also to supply the school canteen with organic vegetables and a one-year vocational training in agroecology which welcomes young Cambodian women and men from disadvantaged backgrounds.
