In 1926, the Medical Mission of the Anglican Church started St. Nicholas' Home with seven or eight crippled and blind children in Malacca. Then, in 1938, the Home moved to the current location at Jalan Bagan Jermal and started a kindergarten for 28 blind children in 1941.
The Home concentrated on education for the blind of all races and creed in Malaya thus becoming the first institution in Malaysia to have started education and rehabilitation for the blind. The intake increased and a complete Primary School for the blind was in session by 1959. Blind students were integrated into main stream secondary schools and many ex-Nicolites went through universities and became professionals in their chosen field.
The Home initiated many other training programmes and services to meet the growing needs of the blind and visually-impaired community in Malaysia.
Currently, St. Nicholas' Home is a multi-service institution catering to the visually-impaired community in Malaysia. It is a voluntary non-profit and non-governmental organization whose work is supported by donations and volunteers. Our main aim is to integrate the visually-impaired into the Malaysian society.
